A call to action: We must ‘not only be better, but do better

As our St. Louis community continues to confront difficult issues in the wake of recent events in Ferguson, Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton is calling on faculty, staff and students to "accelerate the pace of our efforts" as we work toward a stronger future. A new website, Wash U Voices, provides opportunities to reflect, engage and join the conversation. A number of events are also planned, including a staff gathering on Wednesday, Aug. 27, and a University-wide dialogue on Thursday, Aug. 28.

First-year medical students receive white coats

First-year students at the School of Medicine recently participated in the traditional White Coat Ceremony — a rite of passage in which future doctors are welcomed to medical school and the medical profession. In addition to receiving their white coats, the 123 students recited an oath promising honesty and integrity.

Experimental heart attack drug reduces tissue damage, minimizes bleeding risk

An investigational drug studied in animals significantly reduced damage to heart muscle from a heart attack and minimized the risk of bleeding during follow-up treatments, according to a study by scientists at the School of Medicine. The senior author is Dana Abendschein, PhD.

Medical center summer concert tomorrow

Musically talented members of the Medical Center community will be featured in a summer concert at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, in the lobby of the Center for Advanced Medicine.

Campus-wide food drive aimed at Ferguson, surrounding communities

WUSTL has joined forces with Operation Food Search to collect food for Ferguson and surrounding communities. Faculty, students and staff are invited to drop off canned meat or other food items at 21 bins located throughout the campuses. The drive will run through Labor Day (Sept. 1).
